Comparison Of The Hybrid Greats: Prius vs Civic

Prius vs Civic

Hybrid vehicles are popular for a number of reasons, including their high fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and the cost savings they provide.

But with so many choices on the market today it can be difficult to decide which one is best for you.

In this article, we will compare two of the most popular hybrid vehicles: the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid. Though the Honda Civic Hybrid was discontinued, it’s still a popular model to purchase used.

Some of the comparisons we will make include:

  • Price and features
  • Engine & transmission
  • Fuel consumption and Battery Life
  • Driving
  • Safety

Which one will come out on top? Read on to find out!

Toyota Prius vs Honda Civic: Price And Features

As we mentioned, the Honda Civic was discontinued in 2015 but can be purchased used just about anywhere around the country. For this article, in order to compare apples to apples, we’ll use stats of the 2015 Toyota Prius – just to be fair! The 2022 Toyota Prius has a starting MSRP of $25,650, while the Honda Civic Hybrid (the last year of 2015) is around $14,000-$18,000 used. So to make a better comparison, a 2015 used Toyota Prius comes in at an average price of $16,602-$18,001.

Both vehicles come standard with features like Bluetooth connectivity, automatic climate control, and a rear backup camera.

The 2015 Toyota Prius does have a few more standard features than the 2015 Civic Hybrid, including:

  • Entune Audio Plus with Connected Navigation App
  • Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitor System
  • LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL)

The Civic Hybrid does have one feature that the Prius does not have available:

  • Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with Voice Recognition and Honda HD Digital Traffic

So if you are looking for a hybrid with built-in navigation, the Civic Hybrid may be the better choice.

When it comes to interior and exterior features, you may choose one over the other based on your requirements. The Prius is a hatchback, while the Civic is a sedan. Both vehicles have seating for 5 passengers, but if you’re looking for a little more interior space, the Civic might be your better option.

If storage is a concern in a Prius because of the hatchback design, it’s good to take note that the rear seats do fold down flat.

Toyota Prius vs Honda Civic: Engine & Transmission

The Toyota Prius is powered by a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor, which produces a combined HP of 134. It is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

The Honda Civic Hybrid has a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor that produces 143 HP combined. It is also paired with a CVT.

There is not a significant difference in engine or transmission specs between the two vehicles.

Toyota Prius vs Honda Civic: Fuel Consumption And Battery Life

In terms of fuel economy, the Prius gets an EPA-estimated 51 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway. The Civic Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 47 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway.

So both vehicles are very fuel-efficient, but the Prius edges out the Civic Hybrid in both the city and highway driving by a slight amount.

The Toyota Prius has a larger battery than the Honda Civic Hybrid. The Prius battery is a 202 volt nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) that has a capacity of 8.8 kWh. The Civic Hybrid has a lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery with a capacity of 6.7 kWh.

The larger battery in the Prius gives it a longer electric-only driving range than the Civic Hybrid. The 2015 Plug-In Prius can go 11 miles on electric power alone, and a combined 540 miles on battery and gasoline.

The 2015 Honda Civic Hybrid can not run on electric-only but gets a higher overall range per fill-up of 581 miles.

The battery life in both the 2015 Honda Civic and 2015 Toyota Prius is about 6-10 years. But the good news is, there are less expensive options for replacing the battery and making them good as new:

Toyota Prius vs Honda Civic: Driving

The Toyota Prius has been around for a while and is known for its comfortable and smooth ride.

The Honda Civic Hybrid does not quite live up to the standards set by the Prius.

The 2015 Toyota Prius also has a smaller turning radius than the 2015 Honda Civic Hybrid, making it easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

The Civic Hybrid does have one advantage when it comes to driving:

The regenerative braking system in the Civic Hybrid is more aggressive than the one in the Prius, which gives drivers more of a feeling of being in control.

Prius vs Civic

Prius vs Civic: Safety

Both the 2015 Toyota Prius and the 2015 Honda Civic Hybrid come with a variety of safety features, including airbags, antilock brakes, and traction control.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given both vehicles their highest rating of “Good” in all crash tests.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the 2015 Toyota Prius an overall safety rating of 5 stars. The 2015 Honda Civic Hybrid also received a 5-star rating.

So both the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid are very safe vehicles.

Prius vs Civic: Which Is Better For You?

When it comes to hybrid vehicles, both the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid are great choices.

The Prius is slightly more expensive than the Civic Hybrid, but it does have a few more features. It is also more fuel-efficient and has an electric-only driving range.

The Civic Hybrid is a great choice if you are looking for a hybrid with built-in navigation.

So which one is better for you? It really depends on your needs and preferences. In either choice, you’re getting a reliable vehicle that’s built to last. And when your hybrid battery is eventually in need of replacement, Exclusively Hybrid has you covered to ensure you’re not breaking the bank.
